CIV4235: Advanced Structural Design

  • Plastic design of steel structures;
  • Plastic design of reinforced concrete slabs;
  • Yield line theory and Hillerborg's strip method.

Comments of students:

'I want to take this chance to thank you for your guidance throughout this sem. You have been a really good and helpful lecturer, and you never hesitated to provide help when asked. So glad to be one of your students' (Jia Lai, semester 2, 2017).

'For me the part I found most interesting was the plastic analysis of beams and frames using the methods taught. I found that was a great tool to quickly solve how the structure would ultimately collapse, as well as what maximum load it could sustain. As you could solve what would otherwise be a statically indeterminate structure by hand due to the Mp at every point, I felt it was quite a good tool to use in conjunction with more complex software. Strut and Tie has also been useful and I have used it at my work as well. It is very practical, and the fact that engineers who have been working for 15 plus years are still adopting this method shows its importance. Thank you for your help this semester Phu. It has been a very well taught class and I gained a lot of knowledge from it.' (John Walker, semester 2, 2016, now working at AECOM)
